What is Model United Nations (MUN)?
|
| The "What" question Model United Nations, as its name suggests, is a conference simulation of the practices, actions, and debates of the real United Nations. |
| These simulations are initiated by students, brought forth by students, and participated by students, thus giving Model UN its unique nature. Quick Facts: v Model United Nations is an authentic simulation of the UN General Assembly and other multilateral bodies. v The earliest simulations began in the 1920s. v Simulations of the League of Nations were predecessors of Model UN. v According to official records, over 500,000 students participate in MUN around the globe. v Private figures show that over 2 million people are involved in MUN affiliated work each year. v Participants range from elementary to PhD students.. v More than 400 international MUNs take place each year, scaling from 200 to 4,000 delegates per conference. |
| Why MUN? Act up! We are in a fast changing world. MUN gravitates students to take an affirmative role as a global citizen. MUNers are no longer the silent observers; we speak up and connect ourselves to the world through model conferences. It is time to broaden our visions and put goals into action. |
Well...yeah, but why model the UN? The UN is basically a parliament of nations. Through simulating a UN conference, students are given the chance to step into the shoes of diplomats and exercise negotiation skills.Students participate in simulations of UN branches and intergovernmental organizations, such as the General Assembly (GA), the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) ; the ASEAN, the Islam Summit, etc. |
